i was always a kde lover. there was time when i even didn't installed gnome because it was so clumsy. but there was a time where my hardware got incompatible and Linux and we were separated.
after a long time things changed, ubuntu appeared and became a top ditro. gnome evolved and became slick and easy to use. and kde launched 4.0. my second stint with Linux began with mint Linux. and i was amazed, amazed that how much Linux has grown, how much genome is polished, its even better than windows for god sake.
i was itching to try the kde 4.0, all the time i could hear was phonon, photon, plasma and i don't know what. it sounded so magical. so i fired up my super slow connection, and after 2 days, got my kde.
my 1 reaction .............yuck!
what has happended to kde, why does the desktop look so windowish, it crashes it hangs and most of all , after leaving the desktop, everything looks ugly.
such a sad day, i removed Linux altogether.
i downloaded ultimate edition with gnome , kde and xfce.
it crashes, its heavy and again just after crossing the desktop, looks downright ugly.
i was hesitant but now i upgraded to 4.3.1. it was a pure struggle on my net connection, but i did it. although 40 packages are yet to be upgraded/install.ed .
my reaction.........two thumbs up
kde developers have worked hard this time, the desktop is stable, not rock solid but yeah very stable. speed is in even with composite on. the desktop looks much less like windows. although after that it still look a bit ugly but i really feel that the environment is finally ready. most of all, i think kde has gained its lost soul.
sadly i still don't use it regularly.
here is what i have done
1. gnome is equipped with slick theme, compiz and all the eye candy i can think of. this is my default desktop
2. if i miss my windows, i just log in to kde and drool
3. i made xfce look more more like a mac including the latest cairo-dock. even managed to install mint menu in it. it rocks
kde has ways to go, but it will definitely going to be the coolest desktop due to there radical ideas and design set forward in kde 4.0. i am waiting for similar step with gnome on their gnome 3.0 project. lets keed our fingers crossed
